Ware foot surgery this week…02/16/2010

Ware wanted to wait until after Pro Bowl
By Calvin Watkins, ESPNDallas.com

Dallas Cowboys outside linebacker DeMarcus Ware is scheduled to undergo surgery Thursday to shave down a bone spur on his left foot.

Ware wanted to wait until after the Pro Bowl, which he played in earlier this month, before having the procedure.

Ware, who led the Cowboys with 11 sacks and led the NFL in quarterback pressures, battled through injuries for most of the year. He sustained a severely sprained neck against San Diego on Dec. 13 and was carted off the field on a gurney. Despite the belief that he would miss two games, returned to play the following week vs. New Orleans.

Ware also suffered from back stiffness, a chipped bone in his left wrist and a stress fracture in his left foot. However, he didn’t miss any games and finished the season with 57 tackles and five forced fumbles.

Five Cowboys on All-Decade Team

Five players with Cowboys’ ties were named to the 2000s All-Decade Team, including current outside linebacker DeMarcus Ware.

Ware’s inclusion on the 53-player team had been announced earlier as part of the NFL’s Pro Bowl week. The rest of the team was announced Sunday, and Terrell Owens, Larry Allen, La’Roi Glover and Zach Thomas also were named to the All-Decade Team. All four spent at least a season with the Cowboys during the past decade.

The NFL All-Decade teams are chosen every 10 years by the 44-member Pro Football Hall of Fame selection committee. The 2000s team will mark the ninth All-Decade Team selected in NFL history.

Demarcus Ware just “gets it.”01/29/2010

Demarcus Ware could have been like the 16 others who pulled out of the Pro Bowl for various reasons, injuries an easy excuse, not wanting to go and play another one, but Ware—battled through ankle, foot, and neck injuries throughout the season and is in Miami to play in the Pro Bowl anyway. I love this guy.

Ware opts for Pro Bowl before surgery
By Tim MacMahon, ESPNDallas.com

Dallas Cowboys outside linebacker DeMarcus Ware will undergo surgery next week for a bone spur in his left foot.

He delayed the surgery so he could play in the NFL Pro Bowl on Sunday. There are 16 players who will not participate in the NFL’s all-star game because of injuries.

Ware played most of the season with a stress fracture in his left foot. He also dealt with a fracture in his wrist and a neck strain that led to him leaving Cowboys Stadium in an ambulance on Dec. 13.

But Ware, who had two sacks in a win over the previously undefeated New Orleans Saints the week after injuring his neck, has not missed a game in his five-year career. And he didn’t want to miss his fourth consecutive Pro Bowl.

“It’s just fun to be here and it’s an honor,” Ware told the Cowboys’ official Web site. “I think it’s a big deal to be here and I wanted to be a part of it.”

Ware described the surgery as “not really a big deal” and said he would be off his feet for about a week after the operation.

Ware is one of eight Cowboys on the NFC team, which is being coached by Wade Phillips and the Dallas staff. Cowboys center Andre Gurode was voted to be a starter but will not play because he needed arthroscopic surgery on his knee.

No practice for DeMarcus Ware

DeMarcus Ware will miss his second straight day of practice because of the neck injury he suffered Sunday against San Diego.

Ware was scheduled to undergo more X-rays and an MRI in addition to some strength tests today. He said Tuesday that he believes he could play against the Saints even if he did not practice during the week.

Wade Phillips said if Ware is cleared medically then the linebacker could play. If Ware misses the first game of his career, rookie Victor Butler would get the first start of his career.

Ware could miss two weeks…12/14/2009

ARLINGTON, Texas — Dallas Cowboys outside linebacker DeMarcus Ware was carted off the field after his head hit the hip of San Diego Chargers right tackle Brandyn Dombrowski on Sunday.

Ware suffered a sprained neck and was taken to a local hospital for X-rays as a precaution. He was alert and had feeling in all his extremities. The linebacker had tissue damage but nothing structural.

“Initially, it looks like right at the base that he has a sprain,” Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said. “I don’t want to get into medicine. Obviously I’m not qualified, but we feel very good about everything was moving. Everything was going. It was just by the nature of where it was. The doctors felt good. He’s at the hospital right now.”

Later Sunday, Ware was released from the hospital and is expected to miss two weeks, sources close to the situation told ESPNDallas.com. The Cowboys (8-5), who fell out of the NFC East lead when Philadelphia beat the Giants late Sunday, play at 13-0 New Orleans on Saturday night and visit Washington on Dec. 27.

Ware spent Sunday night icing his neck at home and had significant soreness and swelling, one source said.

Ware was rushing Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers with 11:28 to play in the fourth quarter when his head smashed into Dombrowski’s left hip. Ware’s wife, Taniqua, rushed down to the field with several family members.

The linebacker was moving his arms and legs before doctors and trainers came onto the field to get him.

Trainers removed Ware’s face mask before lifting him onto a cart.

“The good thing is we saw him moving. Definitely from that indication, things weren’t going to be too bad,” said teammate Terence Newman, who spoke to Ware while he was being loaded on the cart. “But the fact you’re taken off on a stretcher, you’re still always nervous.”

As Ware was being wheeled into the tunnel with associate trainer Britt Brown, he waved both his hands and wiggled his feet. He also gave a thumbs up and a made a motion with his fingers to look like a W.

“Nobody really wants to get hurt. We talked at one point and he was telling me to tell his [teammates] when I got in [the locker room] that he was alright,” Cowboys inside linebacker Bradie James said. “But we saw him moving. Anytime that you have a neck issues, or something happens to your neck, it just really lets you know how precious life is.”

Ware leads the Cowboys with nine sacks and 35 quarterback pressures coming into the game.

“We all love DeMarcus and obviously he’s an incredible player,” Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo said. “But more important to all of us, he’s a great guy and he’s a joy to be around. Rain or shine he has a smile on his face and he’s always lifting everybody’s spirit. We’ll be praying for him.”

In October, Ware agreed to a $78 million, six-year contract extension through the 2015 season that included a $20 million signing bonus. The 27-year-old Ware was in the final year of the contract he signed after being the 11th overall pick in the 2005 draft.

The Cowboys drafted Ware over Shawne Merriman, who was taken the next pick by the Chargers. The two standout defenders have been ever-linked since. They keep in contact with each other, consider each other friends, and were playing in the same regular-season game for the first time.

“I told him I’d call and check up on him,” Merriman said. “It sounds like he’s in good shape. I think it was just precautionary.”

Ware was replaced by Victor Butler.

Ware, Cowboys agree on contract extension…10/26/2009

Dallas Cowboys, DeMarcus Ware agree on contract extension
By TODD ARCHER / The Dallas Morning News

(Jay Glazer of foxsports.com is reporting the contract is for 6-years, $78Million with $40M guaranteed)

IRVING – It might have taken some time, but DeMarcus Ware and the Dallas Cowboys have come to terms on a contract extension.

The length and figures are not known but the Cowboys have a press conference scheduled for 4:30 today at Valley Ranch.

At 27, Ware is entering the prime of his career and has recorded four sacks in his last two games. A first-round pick in 2005, he has 57.5 sacks in his career and has been named to the Pro Bowl in each of the last three seasons.

Ware led the NFL with 20 sacks in 2008, becoming just the sixth player since sacks became an official stat in 1982 to reach that mark in a season. He also shares the NFL record with Simon Fletcher for consecutive games with a sack with 10 and he holds three of the top-five sack seasons in franchise history.

Without an extension of the collective bargaining agreement, Ware was scheduled to be a restricted free agent after this season.

In the off-season, Washington signed defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth to a seven-year, $100 million deal with $40 million guaranteed. Baltimore outside linebacker Terrell Suggs signed a six-year, $62.5 million deal with $38.1 million guaranteed and Pittsburgh inked James Harrison, who beat out Ware for the NFL Defensive Player of the Year award last season, to a six-year, $51 million deal with $20 million guaranteed.

Ware’s contract falls in line with what owner and general manager Jerry Jones has done in the past, taking care of younger players before they can hit free agency. He has done it with Tony Romo, Bradie James, Jason Witten, Jay Ratliff, Terence Newman and Andre Gurode.

Cowboys, Ware talking contract…09/11/2009

Dallas Cowboys, DeMarcus Ware discuss contract extension
By TODD ARCHER / The Dallas Morning News

The Cowboys and the agent for DeMarcus Ware have stepped up talks regarding a contract extension for the Pro Bowl outside linebacker.

Ware’s agent, Pat Dye, and Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones met for a few hours Thursday at Valley Ranch, and progress was made.

“It was very, very cordial,” Dye said. “They made some significant moves in certain components of the contract, and we made some significant moves on certain components of the contract. I think it was a very constructive discussion, but until you reach a result or have a result, how do you measure progress?”

The Cowboys and Dye had not talked about a new deal for Ware – who is scheduled to make $1.005 million this season – since before training camp.

Ware would be a restricted free agent after this year if there isn’t a new collective bargaining agreement between the NFL and the players association.

“I wouldn’t say anything is closer,” Ware said of his contract talks, “but I would say the process is still going. We’re still trying to get some things done. They’re trying to show they want me here, and I’m trying to show them I want to be here.”

The Cowboys have repeatedly said keeping Ware, who led the NFL with 20 sacks in 2008, is their top priority.

Ware and Dye said there is no deadline for a deal to be completed before they would stop negotiating.

“I don’t want it to be and I know they don’t want it to be a distraction for DeMarcus,” Dye said. “Up to this point it hasn’t been, and we’ll do our best not to let it be.”

Ware said his focus is on the field, not a potential payday. He is looking to become the first player to post back-to-back 20-sack seasons since 1982, when sacks became an official stat. Ware is also coming off his first 100-tackle season, and he led the team with eight tackles for losses and six forced fumbles in 2008.

“Can I be more effective than I was last season? I feel like with what I’ve done and what we do now, I can be,” Ware said.
