Hayes’ family anticipates a mix of tears, cheers08/02/2009
Before Hall of Fame quarterback Roger Staubach joined the Dallas Cowboys in 1969, he was completing a four-year commitment in the Navy. Staubach only saw the talent of his future receiver, the late Bob Hayes, from television or game films sent to him by team executive Gil Brandt.
Then on Dec. 12, 1971, Staubach’s first season as the primary starter, one play from a 42-14 road victory over the New York Giants presented a clear, defining picture of why he thinks Hayes belongs in the same company with the NFL’s all-time greats.
“As a quarterback, you feel like you’re overthrowing [Hayes] sometimes and you end up underthrowing him,” Staubach said. “I threw a [85-yard touchdown] pass against the Giants he caught at midfield, and Spider Lockhart, one of the NFL’s fastest players at the time, is right with him. When Bob crossed the goal line, Spider was 5 or 6 yards behind. [Hayes] just had another gear.”
