Cowboys cut Hawkins, Coleman…08/17/2009

Cowboys reduced their roster by two on Monday by releasing cornerback Michael Hawkins and running back Alonzo Coleman.

The Cowboys roster is now at 77

Hawkins, who played high school football at Carrollton R.L. Turner had not practiced since bruising his kneecap during the opening week of training camp. He did not receive an injury settlement.

Meanwhile, Coleman, who has been on and off the Cowboys roster, received an injury settlement for his knee injury that forced him to miss most of training camp.

Coleman has been on the Cowboys practice squad for two years, and was promoted to the active roster at the end of the 2008 season.

NFL teams need to get their roster to 75 by September 1st.

Offense vs. Defense (10:35am)07/30/2009

Romo at QB, I-Formation, Barber up the middle bounces for a few and then looses the ball, FUMBLE!

One back with Felix Jones, Romo, off left side, falls for 3-4 yards.

Again, there isn’t tackling so yardage doesn’t matter.

Third play Tashard Choice off left tackle, looks quick and continues running through would-be tacklers.

Kitna takes over for a few snaps.

Alonzo Coleman was able to burst through for what would’ve been a nice gain.

Numbers game for him and anyone else not named Barber, Jones, and Choice.

Meanwhile, a few DB’s and WR’s are still going through technique drills on the other end of the field.

Starting defense in running drill…

DL: Jay Ratliff, Marcus Spears, Igor Olshansky
LB’s: Brooking, James, Ware, Spencer
Safeties: Hamlin and Sensabaugh

Second team in—Kitna bobbles snap from Cory Procter.

Horn blows—players take a break.

Okay, some offense-vs-defense again.

Romo swing pass to Witten for short yardage.

Romo, 2-TE’s, dumps out of backfield to Barber–heavy rush from right side from D. Ware.

Felix Jones left side, tight ropes the sideline….again no tackling so there would’ve been short yardage.

Offset I, Romo steps away from pressure and throws to Witten right sideline for 5-yards.

One back, Austin in motion, play-action, middle seam for Austin who makes the catch for 20-yards while sliding down. Nice throw.

Kitna in, offset I, Choice off left tackle…always has a lot of energy.

Kitna, 2-backs, Bennett as H-Back, Kitna throws right sideline for Jefferson, batted away, timing wasn’t very good on that one.

Kitna, mix-up on snap…busted play.

Kitna, one back, bootleg and finds TE John Phillips underneath.

Kitna quick hitch to Kevin Ogletree left side, short yardage.

McGee drops one over the middle underneath to K. Lattimore.

McGee draw to Lattimore left side—not much.

Romo back in, defense jumped offside.

Romo hands to Barber left for a long cut-back run…

Romo to Roy Williams 15-yard curl route, broken up nicely by Mike Jenkins.

Felix Jones right side on a running play.

Romo, fake pitch left—tries to find Crayton on a bootleg right, pass batted down by Marcus Dixon.

Kitna toss pitch right to Choice, decent gain.

Man, I’d like to see some tackling for a few plays.

Easy for me to say up in the booth at the age of 50.

Kitna, steps away from pressure—would’ve been sacked, deep right sideline for Hurd, diving attempt, incomplete pass.

Kitna, attempted flea-flicker with Choice tossing back to Kitna, Choice never had a chance.

Carpenter tries to run stretch to the right, broken up by NT Jay Ratliff.

Carpenter left sideline completed pass to Mike Jefferson, 15-yards.

Horn blows, break in practice.

11-on-11 offense vs. defense continues, not much going on.

Nice screen setup from Romo to Barber.

Romo dump off pass to Crayton—falls incomplete.

I need to say this—perhaps unfair—not sure, either the defense is improving with more pressure, but a lot of passes are hitting the ground.

Romo’s dump off pass to Jones for a few yards, had the ball stripped away, fumble.

While watching just the first two practices…I really notice the change in the personality of this team.

Just guys trying to make plays…a lot of new faces and it’s taking me more time than normal to put jersey numbers with names.

Manuel Johnson being directed to move to the other side by Jon Kitna, and then he goes back in motion where he was, toss left to Felix Jones for a short gain.

Carpenter in at QB, play-action, no one open, dumps it to right side.

Horn blows, stretching and practice is about to end.

I’m going down to the field for a few comments.
