Phillips worried about now, not future…20th Nov, 2009

The following is an article from espndallas.com. With the Cowboys being 6-3 and leading the NFC East by a game over Philly and the NYG, are you confident that Wade Phillips will return after the 2009 season? If yes, why, and if not—why not?

And, I guess the obvious question is what does Phillips need to accomplish this season to satisfy whether you bring him back for the option year or extend his contract?

Phillips not worried about contract
By Calvin Watkins, ESPNDallas.com

IRVING, Texas — Dallas Cowboys coach Wade Phillips said he isn’t worry about his job security because it’s something he can’t control. Phillips is in the last year of his contract but the team has an option for the 2010 season, something owner Jerry Jones hasn’t committed to.

“That will come or it won’t, those are the things later on that I don’t think about,” Phillips said. “I don’t even worry about it now. I was pretty happy in San Diego when we were 14-2 and then I got this job and it’s even better. I’m enjoying it.”

As coach, Phillips is 76-52 including interim spots in New Orleans and Atlanta. He is 0-4 in the postseason, however.

Phillips understands the business. In three seasons with Buffalo, Phillips went 29-19 and was fired. It wasn’t a surprise to him because his father, Bum, was fired as coach of the Houston Oilers after going 32-16 in his final three seasons as coach. Wade Phillips said he doesn’t coach like he’s under pressure to win because of these experiences.

“That’s the way I coach, that’s the way I’ve always coached,” he said. “Way back when we went 10-6, 10-6, 11-5 and two AFC championship games and we got fired I realized that, hey you can do a great job and for whatever [reason] you can be gone. I stopped worrying about all that and worried about coaching and trying to do the best I can to help the team win and that’s all I think about.”

Minnesota coach Brad Childress, with one year left on his contact, received a three-year extension Thursday.

Phillips, with his team at 6-3 and in sole possession of first place in the NFC East, said he doesn’t worry about what other coaches are making and how it might affect his status.

“I’m not thinking about going anywhere either,” Phillips said. “I’ve always been that way, my whole life, wherever we’ve been, I said we’re going to be here the rest of our lives. Everywhere we’ve been, my kids can tell you that. I think we’re going to stay there, but you realize in pro football how much it changes for whatever reason. It’s all kinds of reasons and it’s not necessarily how well you coach or what you do sometimes.”

Cowboys kicker has toe fracture…19th Nov, 2009

Kicker David Buehler has a fracture
By Calvin Watkins, ESPNDallas.com

IRVING _ Kicker David Buehler has a fracture of the pinkie toe of his right foot. But the Cowboys kicker said he plans to kick in practice today.

“Just test it out and see who much I can do,” Buehler said before Thursday’s practice. “If I can do the whole practice effectively that’s what I plan on doing. If I can kick today, I can kick Sunday.”

In other injuries, free safety Ken Hamlin, out two-to-four weeks with a right high-ankle sprain will wear a walking boot for two weeks.

Right tackle Marc Colombo, out up to six weeks to recover from surgery on his left ankle and fractures to his left fibula, is wearing a walking boot as well. He does not need a cast.

Also, cornerback Mike Jenkins said he should play Sunday and that the swelling in his bruised left bicep is almost gone. The swelling stretched from the middle of his biceps to just past the elbow.

Free to start at right tackle…18th Nov, 2009

Free filling in for injured Colombo
By Tim MacMahon, ESPNDallas.com

IRVING, Texas — The decision has been made regarding Marc Colombo’s replacement at right tackle. It’s Doug Free’s job, according to Dallas Cowboys offensive line coach Hudson Houck.

The coaching staff considered moving Pro Bowl right guard Leonard Davis over a spot and replacing him with Montrae Holland or Cory Procter. They decided to go with Free, who had minimal regular season experience before filling in after Colombo suffered potential season-ending ankle and leg injuries in the first quarter of last week’s loss to the Green Bay Packers.

The 6-foot-6, 313-pound Free, a fourth-round pick in 2007, will make the first start of his career Sunday against the Washington Redskins.

“The exciting part of it is you’ve got another guy ready to go,” Houck said. “He steps in. He got his turn. And we don’t miss a beat.”

Colombo hasn’t missed a game since he became a starter at the beginning of the 2006 season. He’s a mauler with a nasty disposition who was voted by his teammates as the Cowboys’ offensive MVP for the 2008 season.

“Marc Colombo has been a heck of a player for us — not only a good player on the field, but a great leader,” offensive coordinator Jason Garrett said. “Everybody on our team responds to him and how he approaches the game. We certainly will miss him, but we’re excited about Doug Free.

“He’s been with us for three years now and really taken the right approach. He’s improved as a player. We’re excited about what he did the other day in the game against Green Bay and we’re excited to see him play this week.”

NFL schedule helps, hurts ailing Cowboys…17th Nov, 2009

Cowboys are in the midst of playing three games in 12-days.

That’s the bad news for a team beat-up both mentally and physically following the loss in Green Bay.

The good news—the next two games come against the (3-6) Redskins and (2-7) Raiders, and both at home.

NFL admits officiating mistakes…16th Nov, 2009

The NFL admitted on Sunday evening there were two mistakes made during the Cowboys-Packers game, one was the fumble review—which can’t be reviewed based on replay rules—and the other was enforcing a 15-yard penalty against Packers head coach Mike McCarthy for using a challenge when he didn’t have one available.

That should have been a 15-yard penalty.

Cowboys lose game, two starters…16th Nov, 2009

Cowboys have been for most part injury free throughout the 2009 season, but their trip to Green Bay not only brought a loss, but two starters lost—one long-term and another for between 2-4 weeks, and others hobbling as well.

Starting right tackle Marc Colombo is out for the remainder of the regular season and “might” return if the Cowboys make the playoffs.

Safety Ken Hamlin is out between 2-4 weeks, and others had their egos and bodies bruised in the 17-7 loss in Green Bay.

IRVING, Texas — Dallas Cowboys starting right tackle Marc Colombo will undergo surgery Monday to repair ligaments on his left ankle after suffering a high ankle sprain in Sunday’s loss to the Green Bay Packers.

Colombo also has a fracture on his fibula near his left knee that doesn’t need surgery. Cowboys officials said the recovery time for the fibula injury is six weeks.

Recovery time for the ankle has not been determined, and owner and general manager Jerry Jones had said Colombo is out for the season.

The Cowboys are hopeful Colombo can return at some point, especially if the team makes a deep playoff run.

In other injury news, starting cornerback Mike Jenkins underwent an MRI on his left biceps Monday. Jenkins said his arm feels fine, but he didn’t know the results of the MRI.

Also, kicker David Buehler was limping in the locker room Monday. He said he hurt the little toe on his right foot while covering a punt.

“I’ll be able to kick,” Buehler said. “It hurts like hell.”

Also—adding to all this was more from Hamlin to miss 2-4 weeks with high ankle sprain

Also—in another report updated on espndallas.com, safety Ken Hamlin
is out 2-4 weeks with a high-ankle sprain.

Cornerback Mike Jenkins had an MRI on his left bicep, but said he felt fine—although when he returned after the injury, he played on snap before leaving the game.

Packers end Cowboys 4-game win streak, 17-7…16th Nov, 2009

Well, there’s a reason I never gamble, I’m an NFL idiot and I’m the same NFL idiot who predicted the Cowboys would beat the Packers, 36-17.

Cowboys lose Colombo to broken fibula…15th Nov, 2009

Colombo in doubt with broken fibula
By Calvin Watkins, ESPNDallas.com

GREEN BAY, Wisc. — Dallas Cowboys starting right tackle Marc Colombo has a broken left fibula and will not return. His status for the rest of the season is in doubt.

Colombo was hurt with 5:41 to play in the first quarter after a 5-yard run by Marion Barber. Colombo was on the field for several moments while the training staff examined him.

He walked off the field with help but didn’t put any pressure on his leg. He was then carted to the locker room when he got to the sidelines.

Doug Free replaced Colombo at right tackle.

It’s the second consecutive year the Cowboys have lost an offensive linemen at Lambeau Field. Left guard Kyle Kosier reinjured a stress fracture in his foot in a game here last year.

Cowboys @ Packers “Game-Day”15th Nov, 2009

Cowboys are on a nice roll with four-consecutive wins, and it’s amazing how much has changed since their near meltdown loss in Kansas City.

Romo has been nearly perfect—Austin’s arrival was just in time because it’s made everyone else better.

The running game at times is nice, but still a little hit and miss, but they’ll be fine.

Defensively, the Cowboys are being disruptive which is what I thought would occur during Wade Phillips’ first season—that really never happened, but the Cowboys defensively are gathering steam and the play of the secondary has helped. There’s a lot of confidence at Valley Ranch and I think the Cowboys go into Lambeau and hammer a beaten-up Packers team, 36-17.

Here’s the “Game-Day” Link…
